Biography
I was born in the seaside town of blackpool, england and became interested in music at an early age, I tried to learn a variety of musical instruments including the guitar, mandolin and the piano (all very badly!). And then became interested in soul music after seeing otis redding in concert. I collected soul records as a hobby and started to write articles for the “blues and soul” magazine. I began working as a dj in soul clubs in the north of england, notably the mecca in blackpool, a haven for northern soul, and then left the UK to work as a dj for the American forces in Germany.
I returned to Great Britain to live in Swansea, Wales and presented “soul time” for one of the early UK independant radio stations, “swansea sound”. After spending some time in America observing American radio stations, I progressed to presenting the breakfast show and left to work at the tv station “htv” as newsreader, continuity announcer and sports reporter for itvs “world of sport” (this was when Swansea city was at the top of the league!!)
In 1988 I moved to the radio station “2cr” in Bournemouth (another seaside town!) as head of presentation and in 1990 came out to Vienna to work for the english radio station “blue danube radio”. Returning to England in 1992 a 2 year spell at “essex radio” (another seaside town!) before returning to vienna to present “continental breakfast” once again for “blue danube radio”….(well it is near water….the river danube!)
I was the first voice to be heard on fm4 when it was relaunched as a 24hr alternative music radio station for the whole of Austria, southern Germany and surrounding countries…Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Liechtenstein and present the morning show (6am-10am) I’ve lived in Austria permanently since 1994 and now call it home!
Geboren bin ich in der englischen Küstenstadt Blackpool und zeigte schon frühes Interesse an Musik. Ich versuchte verschiedene Musikinstrumente zu lernen z.B. Gitarre, Mandoline und Klavier. (Leider ohne allzu großen Erfolg!) Ich entwickelte ein leidenschaftliches Interesse an Soul Musik nach einem Otis Redding-Konzert; kaufte und sammelte von da an jede Soul-Platte, die mir unter die Finger kam und begann Artikel für das “Blues and Soul”-Magazin zu schreiben. Begann wenig später als DJ in Soul Clubs im Norden von England und ließ schon bald “die Insel” hinter mir, um am Festland – in Deutschland – als DJ für die “American Forces” zu arbeiten. Schließlich vermisste ich das Meer und ging zurück nach Swansea an der Südküste von Wales, wo ich “Soul Time” für “Swansea Sound” – eine der ersten privaten Radiostationen in Großbritannien – präsentierte.
Es dauerte nicht lange, und ich stieg zum Präsentator der “Breakfast Show” auf und kurze Zeit später wurde auch das Fernsehen auf mich aufmerksam. Es folgten Jobs als Nachrichtenpräsentator und Fernsehsprecher bei “HTV” und als Sportreporter bei ITV’s “World of Sport”. 1988 wechselte ich als Hauptmoderator zur Radiostation “2cr” in Bournemouth (wieder eine Küstenstadt!).
1990 verschlug es ihn dann nach Wien (keine Küstenstadt, aber immerhin an einem Fluss!), wo er für den englischsprachigen Sender “Blue Danube Radio” arbeitete. Ich kehrte 1992 kurzfristig nach England zurück, um für zwei Jahre für “Essex-Radio” zu arbeiten (die Sehnsucht nach dem Meer war doch zu groß!); kehrte anschließend wieder nach Wien zurück, um für BDR “Continental Breakfast” zu präsentieren (entdeckte meine Liebe zu den Salzkammergut-Seen und zum Neusiedlersee als “Ersatzmeer”!). War die erste Stimme, die man hören konnte, als FM4 als Rund-um-die-Uhr-Programm in ganz Österreich “on air” ging. Jetzt präsentiere ich die “Morning Show” auf FM4.
